What is Leadership?
Delegate Responsibility

Develop New Leadership

Any good captain knows what it takes to be a good captain, right? Well... maybe not.

It's hard for most of us to admit that we don't have all the experience we'd like to have when it comes to running a sports team. Let's face it... most of us come from professional backgrounds other than sports and haven't received any formal training in sports leadership or team management.

Luckily, while not everyone can be a Coach Carter, leadership skills can be taught, and tips and secrets can be shared.

We have some of the best in the field lined up to speak to you about what it takes to run a competitive team and keep it fun.

Two 1-hour sessions will be available free over the course of the weekend in 2008.

The first will discuss the tryout process, and methods have that have worked well in various clubs, and those that have failed. Some time will also be allocated for discussion of how to cut someone while retaining their love of the sport.

The second session will discuss the ins and outs of running a successful team behind the scenes from collecting money and accounting tips to ways for getting in to those hard tourneys and making connections in the ultimate community.

Additionally, attendees may also sign up for an interactive session with Brian O'Reilly - sports psychologist. Brian has worked regularily with Olympic calibre athletes and this is a fantastic opportunity to get experience in removing negative external psychology from your team, and how to build a positive environment that will produce the results you want.

Emergency Treatment

We all know how to stay healthy, and no one ever gets hurt playing ultimate, right? Well... maybe not.

Injuries do happen, more so when you don't train and care for yourself properly. However, even the most diligent player can fall prey to a 'hospital pass' or a bad layout. We'll have someone who can talk about what you can do to help avoid injury in the first place, and what it takes to recover afterwards.

Looking to know how to properly tape an ankle? Wrap that knee? We'll get you a hands on session with someone who knows what they are doing.

Our 1 hour lecture provided by an experienced athletic therapist will provide you some insights into what to watch out for and what actions you can do to keep playing. Don't suffer through a bad 'friend' job again!

Finally, many of us want to be First Aid Certified. If we get enough interest, we will look to host a certification course on the last day of the weekend. Renew, or take it for the first time. You never know when it might come in handy.

Putting It Together

We all eat right and know what we should do in order to stay in shape and work the right muscle groups for our sport, right? Well... maybe not.

We'll have someone who can walk you though what a proper warm-up should look like, what you should be doing when you're in the gym, and how you should be treating your body to stay in optimum condition during the season.

You will receive an hour a day on the field with an instructor who will lead you through a proper team warm up that you can take back to your league and touring teams to ensure that everyone knows what they are doing.

We will also have 20+ Canadian Nationals attendee Greg Lang on hand to conduct interactive skills sessions to assist you in improving your throws, your cuts and especially, your perception on the field. Improve your ability to achive more on the field while doing less.

Additionally, Greg Lang will be presenting his new multimedia lecture entitled 'Unstacked'. A review of the popular DVD 'Stacked', this lecture exposes the mistakes made by the top level teams profiled and where they could have made changes to their game to prevent those areas from happening. This is an excellent presentation from a master of the sport.

It's all fun and game when you're playing ultimate! Right?

Well, it should be! This is a sport, but it's a sport like no other. As the saying goes, when a ball dreams, it dreams it is a disc. There is a lot of fun to be had in ultimate and we'll clue you into some of the best.

We'll have someone talk about what 'spirit' really means... in a competitive sense.

We'll talk about how you can ensure that people enjoy themselves, and how important this is, even at the highest level of the sport.

Finally, we'll have a special presentation on ultimate around the world and one person's journey to discover it.

Ultimate is a rapidly chaging sport, and as it changes, we - as players, captains and organizers - need to change along with it.

Join us for a look at some of the new developments in ultimate. Share some of your own insights and hear how others in different cities have met their own challenges and worked to overcome them.
